Outright Opinions

I was reading the Fall 2000 issue of the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" magazine when I came across a disappointing letter. For those of you who haven't seen it, I scanned it and put it here. I wrote a letter in response, but I think it was too late to be considered for publication. Therefore, I decided to put it here to share with you; it's after the printed letter.

Part 2 of Buffy Magazine Letter

Dear Buffy Magazine,

When I first read the letter from the daughters and moms in Michigan and California about the relationship between Willow and Tara, I was appalled. While I am a heterosexual female, I still couldn't believe how close-minded people can be about this topic! However, I would be a hypocrite if I didn't at least try to understand their point of view. I agree with their belief that Buffy is a fictional program about the supernatural. I can also see that there are some people who don't believe homosexual relationships are "right." However, while the show is a form of entertainment, it also presents issues about real relationships, whether they be about friendship or romance between members of the opposite sex or the same sex. Specifically, I have found the romance between Willow and Tara to be a pleasant complement to the sexually charged public (and sometimes private) displays of affection by the heterosexual characters on the show. The people behind the show, along with the talented Amber Benson and Alyson Hannigan, have eased the audience into the characters' relationship which has been greeted with open arms.
I, along with MANY others, look forward to scenes with Willow and Tara. The recent episode, "Family," that centered on Tara, was one of the best written and acted episodes of this season. It was also an episode that fans enjoyed because it featured physical contact between Tara and Willow. Contrary to what those moms and daughters think, there are certainly people who adore Tara and her sweet relationship with Willow. If people don't watch the scenes with these two characters, I truly think they are missing out! Those of us who enjoy Tara and Willow say, "give us more!"
